CURES: CHRONIC PROMISES opens a series of exhibitions deliberating on the power of artistic transitions. It will effloresce into many intertwined, yet autonomous, figments of exhibitionary forces. Situated in the troubled milieu of (German) decolonization, the exhibition explores the work of art and artists that emerged from the alternative world-making practices of collectivity.

This research and exhibition project challenges the conventional notion of an illness-progression timeline (whether bodily, psychic, or ecological) imagined to have a finality. We ask: What if cures – like decolonization – produce no cure? How do we imagine decolonization beyond the remit of cure? This exhibition looks towards artists in collectives, institutions, and movements who have offered utopic proposals or promises for decolonization. Recent challenges to emancipatory struggles demand new appraisals and even inventions of language, foundational values, and spaces of well-being. In this vein, CURES: CHRONIC PROMISES dilate the nodes of decoloniality, cures, and collectivity in the frames of wound, motherhood, and chaos.

CURES: CHRONIC PROMISES (Heilungen: Chronische Versprechungen) eröffnet eine Ausstellungsreihe, die über die Kraft künstlerischer Übergänge nachdenkt und in viele miteinander verflochtene, aber dennoch autonome Gebilde des Ausstellens mündet. Vor dem schwierigen Hintergrund der (deutschen) Entkolonialisierung beschäftigt sich die Ausstellung mit Kunstwerken und Künstler:innen, die aus kollektiven Praktiken alternativer Weltgestaltung hervorgegangen sind.

Das Forschungs- und Ausstellungsprojekt hinterfragt die konventionelle Vorstellung von der endlichen Zeitachse eines (körperlichen, psychischen oder ökologischen) Krankheitsverlaufs. Wir fragen: Was ist, wenn Heilverfahren – ebenso wie Entkolonialisierung – keine Heilung hervorbringen? Wie stellen wir uns Dekolonisierung jenseits der Heilung vor? Diese Ausstellung befasst sich mit Künstler:innen in Kollektiven, Institutionen und Bewegungen, die utopische Vorschläge oder Versprechen für die Dekolonisierung gemacht haben. Aktuelle Herausforderungen für emanzipatorische Kämpfe erfordern neue Bewertungen und Schöpfungen von Sprache, grundlegenden Werten und Räumen des Wohlbefindens. Vor diesem Hintergrund erweitern CURES: CHRONIC PROMISES die Knotenpunkte von Dekolonialität, Heilung und Kollektivität mit den Konzepten von Wunde, Mutterschaft und Chaos.
