Walther Ruttmann steht mit „Berlin. Die Sinfonie der Großstadt“ ganz am Anfang der Geschichte des Dokumentarfilms und europäischer Tradition vom städtischen Realismus (oder Stadt-Sinfonien wie „Manhatta“ von Charles Sheeler und Paul Strand oder Dsiga Wertows „Der Mann mit der Kamera“). Ruttmans Berlin ruht nie, prallt die Gegensätze aufeinander, ist getaktet, präzise, monumental und zugleich mit viel Liebe zu schönen kleinen Dingen. Zwischen einem Brötchen auf einem Backblech, Theaterlichter und dem Stampfen schwerer Maschinen, führt uns Ruthmann durch einen Tag der Großstadt, „einer Gestaltung aus Eisen, Blut und Licht“, „wie sie ein Künstler erfühlt“.

Matthias Hirth (Composition, Klavier, Electronics) vom newsoundKino hat Soundtracks für den Film komponiert und wird den Abend musikalisch live begleiten. Die Musik für diesen Film orientiert sich vor allem am Puls des Großstadtlebens, der durch Hektik und Betriebsamkeit bestimmt, aber auch von kleinen Oasen der Ruhe durchzogen ist. Im Detail wurden diese Vorgaben durch eine zur Rhythmik der Bilder passenden Musik unterstrichen und mit einem detaillierten Sounddesign einzelne Filmpassagen verstärkt sowie mit feinen akustischen Nuancen spezifische Szenen intensiv erlebbar gemacht. So bringt jeder Moment des 24-stündigen Tageszyklus seine eigene musikalische Stimmung mit sich. Von der stillen Dämmerung und Lethargie des Morgens, der Betriebsamkeit des Vormittags, das Ausruhen am Mittag bis zum exzentrischen Pulsieren der Nacht. Das Ergebnis ist eine zeitgenössische, unverwechselbare Klanglandschaft im Sinne der Gegensätze des Stadtlebens.

In detail, these specifications were underlined by music that matched the rhythm of the images and a detailed sound design was used to reinforce individual film passages and make specific scenes intensely tangible with subtle acoustic nuances. Each moment of the 24-hour daily cycle brings its own musical mood with it. From the quiet twilight and lethargy of the morning, the hustle and bustle of the morning, the rest at midday to the eccentric pulsation of the night. The result is a contemporary, unmistakable soundscape in the spirit of the contrasts of city life.
